How to insulate windows for the winter ways and tips
With the arrival of the winter cold, the desire to insulate windows in one’s home becomes stronger, and the question of how to insulate windows becomes more and more urgent. In this article we will note the main ways of warming windows in houses and apartments. And also we will name the main advantages and disadvantages of each of the ways of warming.
It is best to warm the windows before the onset of winter, but most give it only after severe frosts.
It must be said that windows come in a completely different type and form. And for each type and format of the window you need to choose the most optimal, simple and reliable method of insulation.
In the general case, we can say that the window insulation with your own hands can be done fairly quickly and inexpensively. When we say it is necessary to warm the windows, we understand that it is necessary to make them as tight as possible.
In general, windows can be insulated in two ways:
Using materials and methods for sealing gaps.
Carry out insulation by sealing the porch.
The first case of window insulation is more relevant for wooden windows that suffer from antiquity or poor quality material.
Here it should be noted that there are very, very few absolutely sealed wooden windows in nature. In terms of density and sealing, wooden windows are different, but ideally hermetic windows are quite difficult to find.
The easiest and cheapest way to fill up windows with technical cotton wool and paper tapes (or special adhesive paper for windows). Everything is simple – the window slots need to be stabbed with cotton, then taped with paper on top. Although this method is quite ancient, and, so to speak, “old-fashioned”, if you do everything carefully and correctly, the result will be pretty good. And in appearance, the window will be beautiful, and in terms of efficiency and warmth it will satisfy all parameters.
The next, more modern way of insulating windows is the use of silicone sealants or synthetic sealing materials. For this you need a special, simple and convenient hand tool – a lever syringe. With it, you can also quickly and efficiently close up all the holes and gaps in the windows.
It is recommended to use white or, best of all, colorless sealant so that it is not visible on the surface of the windows.
Now for the seal of the porch. As a rule, metal-plastic windows fall into the category of windows that need to be warmed by this method. In theory, such windows should be airtight, but problems happen to it, and they happen quite often!
The reasons for the lack of tightness of plastic windows:
Incorrect, poor installation;
End of shelf life of windows;
To seal the porch for windows, there is a special sealing tape, which is initially present in the plastic window. But over time, it wears out and erases. And with a bad installation, even new windows can let the air flow through.
And finally, let’s call another method that has long been used to insulate all types of windows.
It consists in the use of plastic film. The film covers the entire surface of the window in such a way that it is as close as possible to the glass, but is well stretched. The film can finish the windows, both inside and outside. For external use it is necessary to choose a more dense and durable film. For internal – less dense will do. If your region is famous for high winter frost, you can use plastic wrap in several layers.
Each of these methods is efficient and simple in its own way. You choose for yourself the most suitable and most profitable, based on your conditions, possibilities and preferences.
